Summary of “Of Parents and Children” By Francis Bacon

In essay, poet talks about the relationship of parents and children. The story of an essay begins with writer who says, Children joy and grief are like a secret for the parents as they doesn’t share it with anyone. If children achieve something in life, their parents doesn’t like to share its happiness with anyone. And same thing applies for the sorrow of children. In simple words, parents doesn’t like to share joy and grief of their children with anyone.

The happiness parents receive from their children, they experience it alone only. The hard work parents does in life, they does it for their children and it gives them happiness. Parents work hard to give better life to their children. At the same time parents can’t tolerate misfortune for their children as they knows it would affect their children and they don’t want their children to suffer.

The people who have children doesn’t fear death as they have a hope that they will be remembered through their children. We should also notice that in society most of the time childless man work for the welfare of society.

The childless people work for the welfare of society because they doesn’t have children to remember for generation so they do good deeds to be remembered for long time. The childless people doesn’t leave their DNA in the world but their thoughts and ideas. According to Sir Francis Bacon, childless people are very beneficial for society as they doesn’t leave their money for their children .

The parents wants to raise their family status by hard work, and they does it for their children as they have great expectations from their children. The parents see their children as memory of their good works. In family, father and mother have their favorite kid but the basic difference in father and mother is if son become successful then most happiest person in family would be his father. And if son failed in life then his mother would be more saddened than father.

The father want credit while mother hides bad habits of their kids. If family has more than one child then eldest would get most attention and youngest would get most affection. Due to affection, youngest son gets spoiled, and eldest also get spoiled as they get most attention. The parents focus more on youngest and eldest and does not give much attention to middle child but middle children often do wonders in life and become successful.

The biggest mistake parents make is when they doesn’t open their wallets for their children, they should happily give money to their children. If parents doesn’t give money to their children then it would affect their moral sense. Due to which children do cheating and applies trick to get money. On the other side, there are parents who gives more money to their children than they needed. If you give more money than needed to your children then they will acquire bad habits. Therefore, parents should be careful while giving money to their children.

Parents should be strict and kind while giving money. Sometimes, children become rival of each other in childhood, few parents and school teachers encourage their rivalry which becomes a problem in long term when children become adult and part ways from family. So we should never encourage rivalry among children. The Italian people are best in these things, they doesn’t discriminate among children and treat all children equally.

Sometimes it is best for parents to choose profession for their children but if children are mature enough and want to do something of their own then we should let them choose. We should also give children a chance to do something of their own choice. The eldest brother get money from their father’s property while younger brother become successful with his hard work and dedication.
