Summary of Sweets for Angels By R.K Narayan

R.K. Narayan’s “Sweets for Angels” story begins with an old man named Kali, who is a labourer living in Raipuram. He lives near an abandoned house. Kali lives with his two friends Kuppan and Pachai. Kuppan is a rickshaw puller who does not work and just relaxes on the back seat of his rickshaw.

Kali’s other friend is Pachai who pretends to be blind and begs. Kali is living his life peacefully, he needs only Rs. 1 per day to live which he earns by lifting rice sacks from the truck and taking them to the warehouse. In his free time, Kali relaxes on the village water tank and watches children go to and come from school.

He loves watching children go to school. Kali tells his friend Pachai how intelligent these children are because they can read and write and here are we who don’t even know how to count money. When he sees children playing with books and pencils, he wants to be like them who can read and write. The kids don’t know that an old man watches them, follows them and wishes to be like them.

Kaali loves to listen to the voices of the kids. One day, Kaali delivers a lot of rice sacks from trucks to the warehouse and earns a good amount of money. He hides his money in an old pillow to keep it away from Kuppan because if Kuppan finds out that Kaali has money, he will stop working and start drinking alcohol with Kaali’s money.

Around 11 am Kaali feels hungry, first of all he goes to the handpump and takes a bath. He cleans himself and his cart, and eats delicious biryani from a nearby shop. After this, he returns home and sleeps till evening. In the evening Kaali goes to drink coffee, he drank two coffees from the hotel and when he was paying for the coffee, he heard the ring bell from the school, he again tries to give sweets to other kids and this time a small kid who was wearing shorts takes the sweets from him and eats happily.

After some time, a lot of children gather around Kali to eat sweets and they block the road. This is what Kali wanted. He wanted the children to be happy. A man comes out of the traffic jam and asks a child why so many students have gathered. The small children tell him that an old man is giving sweets to the children and that’s why so many children have gathered here.

The man goes to Kali and holds his hand, he thinks that Kali is a kidnapper of children because recently 5 children have been kidnapped from school. A crowd gathers and starts beating Kali. Kali tries to ask the crowd why they are beating him, but no one listens to him and beats him badly. There comes the police who takes Kali out of the crowd, but Kali was beaten brutally which made him unconscious.

The police officer takes Kali to the hospital where he regains consciousness after 2 weeks. When Kaali regains consciousness, he sees his friends Kuppan and Pachai standing near him. When the nurse leaves, Kuppan tells Kaali that he can join their gang again as the doctor has cut his beard and hair so that no one can recognize him. Pachai tells him that he will get well soon and will stop chasing children. Kaali also vows that he will not go near any child. At the end of the story, a child comes to Kaali and gives him sweets on the occasion of his birthday.
