Summary of Sweets for Angels By R.K Narayan

R.K Narayan’s “Sweets for Angels” story begins with character, Kali, an old man who is a labour and lives in Rayapuram. He lives near an abandoned house. Kali lives with his two friend, Kuppan and Pachai. Kuppan is a rickshaw puller who doesn’t work and just rest on back seat of his rickshaw. Kali’s second friend is Pachai who pretends to be blind and do begging.

Kali is living his life peacefully, he needs only 1 rupees a day for living which he earns by lifting sacks of rice from truck and takes them to warehouse. In his spare time, Kali rest on village water tank and watch children from going and coming to school. He loves watching children going to school. Kali tells his friend, Pachai, how intelligent these children are as they can read and write and here we are who doesn’t even know how to count money.

When he watches children playing with books and pencils, he desires to be like them who can read and write. The children doesn’t know that an old man watch them, follows them and desire to be like them. Kali loves listening children voice. One day, Kali carried plenty of sacks of rice from trucks to warehouse and earn good amount of money. He hides his money in old pillow to keep it away from Kuppan because if Kuppan learns that Kali has money, he would stop working and starts drinking with Kali’s money.

Kali feels hungry at around 11 O’clock in morning, first he goes at hand pump and takes shower. He cleans himself and his vehicle, and ate yummy Biryani from nearby shop. Thereafter, he returns home and sleep till evening. At evening, Kali goes to drink coffee, he drinks two coffee from hotel and when he was paying money for coffee, he heard a Ring Bell from school. Kali knows that children’s are going to come out from school, so he purchases sweets from nearby shop for them.

Afterwards, Kali goes to children to give them sweets, he tries to give sweets to three children but they doesn’t notice him. He again tries to give sweets to another children and this time one little children who was wearing shorts takes sweets from him and eat it happily.

After some time, numerous children gathered around Kali to eat sweets and they block the road. That’s what Kali wanted. He wanted children to be happy. One man comes out from traffic jam and ask one children why there are so many students gathered. The little children tells him that an old man is giving sweets to children and that’s why lots of children are gathered here.

That man goes to Kali and held his hand, he thought Kali is a children Kidnapper as in recent times 5 children have been kidnapped from school. The crowd gathered and started beating Kali. Kali tries to ask crowd why they are beating him, but no one listen to him and beat him harshly. There comes police who takes out Kali from crowd, but Kali was beaten ruthlessly so he faint.

The police officer takes Kali to hospital where he came into consciousness after 2 weeks. When Kali comes into consciousness, he saw his friend, Kuppan and Pachai standing near to him. When nurse goes away, Kuppan tells Kali that he can join their gang again as Doctor has cut his beard and hair so no one will recognize him. Pachai tells him that he will recover soon and stop following children. Kali also swears that he won’t go near to any children. At the end of story, one children comes to Kali and offers him Sweets on the occasion of birthday.
