The Quality of Mercy is an extract taken from the play, “The Merchant of Venice” written by William Shakespeare. Quality of Mercy is a very small part of play, “Merchant of Venice”.
In play, Antonio who is Christian borrows money from Jewish person named Shylock. Antonio promised Shylock that he will return his money in three months otherwise Shylock would have a right to take 1 pound flash from his body. If Antonio did not return the money on time to Shylock, then he will give him 1 pound of flash from his body. Antonio can’t pay the money on time, Shylock goes on Court and demand 1 pound of flash from Antonio.
Antonio’s wife Portia come as Doctor of Law in court to fight on a behalf of her husband. She appeal Shylock to show some mercy on Antonio. But, Shylock is adamant person and steadfast in his demands.

In poem “Quality of Mercy” poet is trying to prove that Mercy is above than everything else in the world. The poet believes mercy is a quality of God, therefore, all the human being in the world should have respect for it.
The story of poem begins with poet who say, you can’t develop a quality of mercy through force. You cannot develop a quality of mercy in you by force. Mercy drops like rain drops from the heaven. It is very valuable and gives twice pleasure. It blesses those who gives it and those who takes it. Mercy is the greatest quality of Mightiest person, it is greater than ruling king and his crown.

The King’s sceptre power is temporary and it doesn’t have as much power as Mercy has. It is greater than a fear which King has on its people. It should be in a heart of enthroned Kings. It is an quality of God himself. Having an Quality of Mercy is an attribute of god. If king has Justice with Mercy, then it becomes it godly power.
