Summary of A Wrong Man in Workers’ Paradise By Rabindranath Tagore
The story of the essay starts with a man who keeps thinking about himself all the time. He wastes most of his time in useless and unnecessary activities. He always wastes his time in things that have no reason or purpose. Like he wastes his time by drawing pictures on jugs and making statues of men, women and kings. People around him look at him, laugh at him and make fun of him because he wastes his valuable time in useless things without any reason.
When people make fun of him and his work, he thinks of quitting his work, he promised himself to quit wasting time but he could not do it. When he died on earth, his life suddenly changed when air messengers send him to heaven instead of hell. When the man went to heaven, he saw that the people of heaven are very busy, they are not wasting even a second of their time. He was wasting his time even in heaven, while all the workers around him were busy in their work.
The man keeps wasting his time in the paradise and also troubles other labourers. When the farmers in paradise saw him, they mocked him that he is in paradise and still wasting his time. The man is sitting idle on the bank of the river in paradise. A girl comes to the river bank to fill drinking water in her pitcher.
The girl comes fast and leaves fast as she has no time to waste. She was so busy in her work that she doesn’t even have time to comb her hair properly. She always comes in a hurry and leaves in a hurry. When the girl saw the man on the river bank she felt pity for him.
She felt pity for him She doesn’t understand what the man is trying to say to her, but she tells him that if he wants, she can find some work for him.
After this, the man asks the girl for a clay pot so that he can make a painting on it. The girl gets angry and tells the man that she doesn’t have time for these useless things. She leaves in a bad mood. The next day, when the girl comes to fill water again, she meets the man again.
He again asks the girl for a clay pot so that he can make a painting on it. This goes on for 2-3 days. After a few days, the girl agrees and she gives him her clay pot. After this, the man makes a painting on it. After making a painting on the pot, he returns it to the girl.
When the man returns the pot to the girl, she cannot understand the painting and the lines made on it. She asks the man, what is the meaning or purpose of this painting? The man laughs at this and tells her that it has no meaning or purpose. The girl returns to her home with the pot in her hand. When the girl returned home, she looked at her painted pot thoroughly to understand the purpose of the painting but she could not understand the meaning of the painting.
The next day the girl was going to fetch water again but now she seemed changed, she was now going slowly and was confused. When she reached the river and saw the man there again, she asked him in confusion, what does he want from her? The man replied that he wants to make a colorful ribbon for her. After this, the man made a colorful ribbon for the girl and when he gave it to her, she was wasting a lot of her time in tying the ribbon in her hair.
When the girl started wasting her time in the ribbon, her work remained incomplete. She was becoming lazy day by day and was not paying attention to her work. She lost the true value of her time. After this, slowly the people of heaven are changing and becoming lazy. The employees of heaven are becoming lazy as their attention is shifting from work to the paintings and statues of man.
The elders of heaven are worried as this has never happened in heaven before. This is the first time in heaven that people are leaving their work incomplete. The people of heaven held a meeting to find out the reason for people being lazy. In the meeting, the air angel revealed that he made a big mistake, he brought a man from hell to heaven by mistake. And that is why all these things are happening.
The president of heaven calls the man and asks him to leave his heaven. The wrong man takes a sigh of relief and starts leaving heaven with colors in his hands. When he was leaving heaven, the girl from the river comes and tells him that she also wants to go with him. The story of the essay ends with the decision of the girl to go with the lazy man which completely shocked the people of heaven.
