The story of poem begins with Upagupta, the disciple of Buddha who is sleeping in the soil on the ground in Mathura City. We all knows Buddha followers had no attachment with anything.
All the lamps and door were closed, it was August month and there were no stars in the sky as sky was covered by clouds. Suddenly, an anklets sound hit Upagupta chest, when he wakes up, he saw a woman with lamp whose light hit his eyes.
She disturbed Upagupta while sleeping but still his eyes were ready to forgive her. She was a dancing girl who was wearing lots of Jewellery and she was wearing a blue color big Gawn. That girl put down her lamp and see a young face of disciple which was very beautiful.
She ask for forgiveness from Upagupta, I am here to respectfully invite you at my home as you are not made to sleep on land. Upagupta responded to woman, you should go on your way, when the right time come I will come to you. Thereafter, woman goes away. The lightning struck at night and the sound of a storm comes from a corner of sky. This is the first part of poem.
The flowers were blooming on branches, a melodious voice of spring season was coming. The people of village had gone to jungle as it was a festival of flowers, and sun is shining from a center of sky. The whole village was empty and deserted, and moon is looking at his shadow. Upagupta was going alone in streets, and cuckoo birds are singing a love songs from Mango trees.
Upagupta passed by a city gate and stand near of wall. He saw that a woman is lying near his feet, it was looking like she is suffering from a disease of smallpox as her body had many spots. It was looking like that town villagers has thrown her out from town so that her disease does not spread to anyone.
Upagupta sit near woman and put her head on his Knees, he gives some water to her and applied balm on her body so that she gets well. That woman ask him who are you as no one had shown mercy on her than why are you doing this. Upagupta replied, the time has come when I should be with you so here I am.
The moral of the poem is human should have high ideals, Physical beauty or outer appearance is not permanent and what really matters is your eternal beauty. At the starting of poem, the same woman tries to lure him but he doesn’t goes with her . He only goes to her when she truly needed his help and was dying from disease.
