Summary of A Sea of Foliage By Toru Dutt

Foliage means representation of leaves, plants, flowers and branches. In simple words a greenery of garden which consist of flowers, leaves and branches is known as Foliage. The poet given a name, “Sea of Foliage” to her poem as she is comparing her garden with Sea because her garden appears endless like sea.

The story of poem begins with poet who say Foliage has covered her garden like a sea but her garden color is not a unvaried green. The poet’s garden is not just green as her garden has different – different variations of color.

Poet’s garden is made up of sharp contrast color as her garden’s few flowers color are Red, some are green, some are light green so poet has different variety of color flowers in her garden. The author has lots of plant of tamarind in her garden whose leaves color are light green. 

The poet has a cluster of mango tree in her garden whose leave color is dark green. There is tree of palm tree among mango trees which look like a green color pillar. As well as poet has pools in her garden where a very beautiful seemuls tree is growing.

The poet has a range of bamboo growing in eastward of her garden which is very lovely to poet. The poet loves her range of bamboos because when moon light passes through bamboo gaps and touches white lotus it shine a like silver cup. After seeing this sight, anyone become so intoxicated as if he has drunk alcohol.

ABOUT AUTHOR : –

Toru Dutt was an Anglo Indian poetess as well as she was Bengali translator. She was born in 4 March 1856 and died at the age of 21 in 30 August 1877. Toru is one of the founding figures of Anglo-Indian Literature. Her famous work include, A Sheaf Gleaned in French Fields and Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan.
