Summary of The Soldier By Rupert Brooke
The story of poem begins with a Soldier of England who says my country is in my heart and body. My body is part of my country as it is made up of soil of England. My body is made up of England water, grains and air. If I die in war in foreign land, then that part of foreign land will become England through me.
If I die in war in foreign land far away from England, then think only this that part of foreign land will be forever England. Wherever I would be buried in foreign land that part will become a part of England through me. And that part of land will become very precious and fertile because of my grave.
The poet is remembering his country and saying that my country has given me flower and plants which I love and has given me freedom to travel anywhere. My body belongs to my country, England and I’m breathing English air, my body has washed by the river of England and I’m blessed by suns of my home. Here we can see that poet is missing his country because he is fighting in a War, far away from his country.
The author says think of a way through which all evil from my heart goes away. And my consciousness remain the same even after my death and my love for my country should never die. The thinking which I have received from England, I will return to the people of England.
The sights, sounds, views and dream which I got from England I will return it back to the people of England. And laughter which I have learned from my friends, I will return it back to people. In the end, I will also return the softness of England to its people.
When I will die after returning all these things to the people of my country, then I will go in English heaven. Through the poem, we learn about the love which poet has for his country even though he is far away from his country and fighting a war.
