The story of novel begins with main character named Phatik Chakravorti, who lives with his mother and younger brother, Makhan. Phatik’s mother look after him and his brother as his father died a long time ago. Phatik is a naughty boy who does not listens to his mother and does not like to play with his younger brother, Makhan.

He is a bit jealous of his younger brother. Phatik is a leader of his boy group and loves to do fight with others. On the other side, we have Makhan who is dear to his mother and obeys everything which his mother says to him. Makhan is good in studies unlike Phatik.

Phatik does not focus on studies, he always waste his time in roming in village along with his friends. One day, Phatik goes at a bank of river with his friends, where they saw a big piece of wood which is going to used to make a boat. Phatik tries to pick that wood with his friends but Makhan comes there and sits on that wood. Phatik’s friends asks Makhan to go away but he does not listen to any of them.

Phatik asks his friend to throw that wood in river with his brother, Makhan. All the friends of Phatik picks that wood and throws it in river with Makhan. Makhan fall into that river and injured himself very badly. He came out from river and started fighting with his elder brother, Phatik. Afterwards, he returns to home crying.

Phatik is scared now because he knows when he will go back to home then his mother will beat him. So he decides to sit on field nearby to that river. Afterwards, he saw one man who comes in boat from river. That man is Phatik’s uncle but he does not know about him as he never met him before. That man came at Phatik and asks him about his home address. Phatik does not tells him anything and goes back to his home.

As soon as Phatik reaches home, his mother yells at him in anger. She is angry on him because he throw Makhan in river and failed in his class. Phatik in anger push his Mother away with is hands. There comes Phatik’s uncle who comes in their home and saw everything. Phatik’s mother tells him and Makhan about their uncle who is her brother. Afterwards, Uncle agrees to stay in their home with their family.

After spending few weeks with Phatik’s family, his uncle decides to go back his home which is in Kolkata. He asks Phatik’s mother to send Phatik with him. Uncle tells her that he will take Phatik in Kolkata for studying. Phatik’s mother is sad and happy both. She is happy because her son is going to study in big city of Kolkata. She is sad because she is going to separate from his son. On the other hand, Phatik is very happy because he does not feel like staying in village.

Phatik happily agrees to go with his uncle in Kolkata. When they reached Kolkata, the view of it was out of Phatik’s expectation. When Uncle reaches his home with Phatik, then his wife started fighting with him because they already have three sons and now how they are going to look after four sons.

As the story progresses, we get to know that Phatik was treated very badly in his Uncle’s home, his aunt used to beat him for a small mistakes. His aunt never look after him and always treated him like he is nothing to her. Phatik always feels like he is living in a jail. Phatik wanted to go back his home because he does not like the environment of his uncle’s home. One day, Phatik asks his uncle to send him back to his home. On which his Uncle replied that he can’t go back to his home because it is not a holiday time.

One day Phatik was returning home from his school, he was not well and he also failed in his class. So he don’t want to go home because if he go home then his aunt will beat him harshly. Phatik instead of going home, goes to hide at stranger’s home.

On the other side, Phatik’s uncle and aunt was in worry because Phatik has not reached the home yet. Therefore, they decides to go at police station. It took lots of time to find Phatik but at the end of day they finally found him. Police officer takes Phatik to his uncle’s home. As Phatik was in fever they takes him to a hospital. Phatik health was not improving in hospital as well and he only wants to go back to his mother.

Thereafter, Phatik’s uncle sends his friend to Phatik’s home to pick his mother from villlage. Phatik’s mother comes at Kolkata and goes in hospital to meet him. At the end of story, Phatik gets very happy after seeing his mother and tells her that holidays has come and he wants to go back with her.
