The story of poem begins with poet who was going back to Cochin from her parents home with her mother. Then suddenly, she saw her mother who is sitting beside her, she was sleeping in car with an open mouth and her face has fade like a ash color. Her face has turned fade and dull like a dead body’s face.
Then author realized that her mother is getting very old day after day. She is so old that she can die at any time but soon she put her that thought away. She can’t bear to see her mother go away from her.
She has stopped thinking about her mother’s age. Thereafter, author saw young trees outside of window who are going by her and getting behind.
The small children are playing and enjoying outside of their home. The poet is quite sad because her mother has grown old and she can die at any time. On the other side, she is getting happy by looking at small children playing.
After reaching airport and completing all the security check, poet looked at her mother again standing away. Her mother’s face has turn pale and dull, it has changed like a late winter’s moon which holds no shine and power. After looking at her mother, author felt the same old pain that how old is her mother now and she may not see her again in life.
This is author’s childhood fear that one day, her mother will go away from her. The poet only able to say few words to her mother, see you soon my sweet mother. After that, all she did was smile and smile and smile. The poet does not let her mother know that how sad she is after seeing her mother go. She was hiding her pain with her smile.
About Author : Kamala Das was a female Indian poet who was born in 31 March 1934. She used to publish her poems by her pen name, Madhavikutty. She has written her poems about many topics out of which most important topic of her poem are Children and Women.
