Summary of Muktadhara By Rabindranath Tagore

The story of play begins with the construction of Dam which is going to build on Muktadhara river in Uttrakut. There comes, Bibhuti, a royal engineer who is constructing a dam in a kingdom of King Ranjeet.

The King Ranjeet is a kind though but he is very cruel for the people of his kingdom and wants complete control on its people. Bibhuti is trying to build a dam from last 25 years and not able to build it but now finally he is going to complete it successfully.

King Ranjeet is very happy with Bhibhuti work because he has finally build the dam and now he can take complete control of Shiv Terai people. The story now features new character, Abhijit, also know as Yuvraj, a son of King Ranjeet to whom he found at the banks of Muktadhara river.

King Ranjeet’s great-grand guru saw a mark on Abhijit’s body and recommended King Ranjeet to adopt him as he will be good for him. King Ranjeet adopted Abhijit on the behest of his great-grand guru.

King Ranjeet also has one real son, Sanjay, who has no problem with Abhijit and very attached to him. Sanjay loves him and consider him as his real brother. On the other side, Abhijit is against the construction of Muktadhara dam as it is a free stream and want it to flow freely.

King Ranjeet is controlling Muktadhara because he wants to control people and will give water to people as per their requirement. As we know that muktadhara dam is build, so now King Ranjeet can give water to people with his own wish. If he want, he will give water to people otherwise he won’t.

As Abhijit doesn’t like the idea of building a dam on Muktadhar, he finds the weakest part of dam and break it so that water can flow freely like it was before. The story now features new character, Dhananjay, a moral and spiritual teacher who teach people about morality and spirituality. He gives people direction and tells them about right and wrong.

When King Ranjeet get to know that Abhijeet has break one weakest part of dam, he decides to send him in prison camp which is protected from Military officers. There comes new character, King Vishwajit, a king of Mohangarh and an uncle of King Ranjeet.

Vishwajit frees Abhijit from prison camp. When Abhijit release from prison, he decides that he will sacrifice himself to free Muktadhara. At the end of play, Abhijit damaged the Muktadhara dam successfully and get drowned in the high flow of river’s water.

King Ranjeet asks Sanjay about Abhijit, so he tells him that when Abhijit was destroying Muktadhara dam, someone hit his back from behind through which his body wounded and he falls in high flow of Muktadhara river. Yuvraj considered Muktadhara as his mother because he was found there to his father, Ranjeet. He died in same river where he was born.
