Summary of Money Madness Poem By D.H Lawrence

The story of poem begins with writer who say, money is our big madness, it is our gigantic madness. Here poet mean to say, money is not just a problem of individual person, it is a problem of everyone. If group is mad about money, then every single individual in it would be little mad for it. Here we can say, from group of person to single individual everyone is mad for money.

The people are so crazy for earning money, that they hesitate to spend it. We tremble because money make us tremble. Money is controlling our life completely, we grovel around it because of our fear. We have strange terror in our mind that someday our money will be taken away from us.

No wonder, money has fearful power which is cruel and does not care about people. Money has so much power that it can scare people and make them troubled.

The poet say, it is not money which terrified us, it is the collective money madness of mankind which terrified all of us. It is because people judge each other on the basis of money. The mankind says in one voice, it ask questions, How much is he worth ? Has he no money ?

And if he doesn’t have money then leave him, let him eat dirt and go cold. If he doesn’t have any money, then there is no need to take care of him.

If I have no money at all, mankind will give me some bread so that I don’t die from hunger. But they will also force me to eat dirt with it. If I will be having no money, then I have to eat dirt. If people are judging you on the basis of money, so running after money is inevitable.

It is that reason for which poet is frightened of. For the same reason, I am mad for money and want to earn money. And that fear can take us away from society. It is fear of mad money men who lives with me and are completely mad for money.

We should must have some money to save us from eating dirt. It is not good idea to ignore money completely because having some money protect us from eating dirt. And this is all wrong. Neither going crazy for money is good nor leaving money is good.

There are few things which are basic needs of life and that should be free like bread should be free, shelter should be free and fire should be free. We must get bread, shelter and fire for free. And it should applied to everyone in the world no matter who he is, these three things should be provided at free of cost.

In the last line of poem, poet advises its reader to regain our sanity about money. It is because if will be mad for money all the time, then the day will come where people will kill each other for money. Its one thing or the other.

Here poet mean to say, either people will start killing each other for money or people will get smart and stop running after money.
