Summary of Father Returning Home By Dilip Chitre

The poet has dedicated this poem to his father, he tells us that how his father work hard for his family throughout the day. The poet says his father travels in late evening train to return home.

The poet’s father is standing in train with commuters, he came across many suburbs while traveling in train but doesn’t look at any of them. He does not look at suburbs because he is used to it and really tired. He just want to reach home as soon as possible.

The poet says his father’s shirt and paint are soggy because of rain, even though he has black color raincoat but it is also stained with mud. The poet’s father has lots of books in his bag but they all are falling everywhere. His eyes are getting dimmed day after day because of aging. Its rainy night and poet’s father is returning home in tiredness.

Finally, poet is watching his father coming out from the train and he is able to see his father. When poet’s father came out from train, no one notices him because no one cares as all are busy in their own life. As soon as poet’s father came out from train, he hurries the train platform to crosses the railway line.

The poet’s father’s sleepers are sticky with mud but he is moving fast towards home. Finally, he reached the home. The author is watching his father drinking tea, eating chapati and reading a good book. This stanza is telling us that no one cares about poet’s father at home. He is eating a stale chapati and to reduce loneliness, he is reading a good book. No one is interested to talk with poet’s father in home. Afterwards, author’s father goes into a toilet to fresh.

The poet’s father is thinking how man made things have made men un friendly from this world. The people are unfriendly in today’s world. The poet’s father keep thinking about this in toilet for long hours. After coming out from washroom, father trembles at the sink of their home. The thought of unfriendliness made him trembles. He believes that there is no one for him in this big world.

The author’s father is standing at sink and the cold water is falling from his brown hands. The Grey hair of his hand wrist are wet in water. The author is trying to tell us that his father is getting old day after day. The father’s stubborn children does not talk with him properly.

As there is no one to talk with him, he will go to sleep listening to his old radio. He will sleep while listening to unclear radio. During sleep, he will watch the dream of his grand kids and ancestors. The father will think about nomads as well because their life is better in today’s world. At least they live together and look after one another. Therefore, father believe nomads life is better than his life.
