The story begins with a poor boy named Dick Whittington who lives in small village of South England. Dick is a poor orphan boy. As Dick has no parents to look after him, no one in his village treat him with respect. His villagers does not like him because he is orphan.  

One day, Dick heard from someone that the streets of London are covered with Gold. He decides to go there because he thinks that if he will have Gold and money, people will start treating him with respect. On the way to London, Dick meets a person who was travelling in cart and ask him, are you running away from your home ? Dick replied, No, I am going to London and I am not running away from my home. A man in Cart was also going London so he ask Dick to come along with him. Dick agreed and sits in his cart to go London.

When Dick reach London, there was no Gold on streets like he heard. All Dick is seeing is very bad streets and strange people. Dick is very disappointed because he thought he would be rich but now is far away from his village and has nothing to eat and no place to stay. Dick move around and in the end stand in front of a house. He is standing in front of Mr Fitzwarren’s house.

Mr Fitzwarren’s servants saw Dick and ask him to run away from their house. Dick does not listen to them and keep standing there. After a while, Mr Fitzwarren come out from house and saw Dick standing. He starts asking him questions like, what are you doing here and where are you from ? Dick tells him that he has not eaten anything from three days and he is from a small village of South England.

Mr Fitzwarren feels bad for Dick, he ends up hiring him as his cook’s servant. As well as he provide small roof house to Dick. The room in which Dick is living is quite small and lots of mouse live there who does not let Dick sleep at night. Dick saves money from his job and buy a cat with that money.

Dick’s cat is great, she ate all the mouses of the room. The Cook with whom Dick is working is short tempered girl and she beat Dick with wooden spoon. She beats Dick for no reason whether he does good work or bad work.

One day, Dick run away from Mr. Fitzwarren house with his cat. He run far away from Mr. Fitzwarren’s house and sits on a stone. It was first of the November when Dick ran, and he was sitting near a church. Dick heard from church, Mr. Whittington go back to Mr Fitzwarren’s house. Go back to Mr. Fitzwarren’s house. Thereafter, Dick goes back to Mr Fitzwarren’s house.

Mr Fitzwarren is a businessman and merchant, and his ships goes to different Kingdom for business purpose, he has started a new business so he loaded all of his stuff in the ship. He ask Dick and his servants to load all the belongings in ship because he wants to sell his belongings in other kingdom.

Dick has nothing to give except his cat, so he ends up giving his cat. The Ship’s Captain gets very happy after seeing cat in his ship, because cats are good in killing mouses. The ship had lots of mouses, but Dick’s cat ate all of them.

When Captain’s ship reached a kingdom, he goes and had a dinner with King and Queen. When Captain was having dinner with King and Queen, he started telling them about Cat, mean he was praising cat in front of King and Queen. When King and Queen listens Cat’s praises, they ask Captain to summon the cat.

When Captain summoned Cat to King and Queen, they get very happy and want to purchase cat. If I will get this cat, I will purchase everything from your ship and pay you 10x more. Afterwards, Captain tells them that they can buy both Cat and ship belongings. The King and Queen purchased everything from the ship including Cat.

When Mr Fitzwarren listen the cat’s story from Captain, he gets very happy, and he was more happy with Dick because it was his cat. Mr Fitzwarren give Cat’s money to Dick and ask him to be his partner in his business. Mr Fitzwarren and Dick became partner and after some time, Dick married Mr Fitzwarren’s daughter, Alice. Thereafter, Dick became Lord Mayor of London for three times. He become very successful in life and started helping poor people with his money.
