Summary of Colours of Silence in English

The story begins with Eight years old Satish Gujral who has not gone to school today. Satish’s friend, Surender come to his home to know why he hasn’t come school today. Surender ask Satish three times, what happened ? But Satish can’t hear him properly.

Satish tells Surender that he is not feeling good. Surender is very concerned for Satish, he again ask him what happened to you, at least tell the reason. Satish tells him that he don’t know the reason but I was having headache. I was feeling dark and silent.

Satish ask Surender, why are you speaking slowly ? Surender understood that Satish can’t hear him properly. It means he lose his hearing power. The story now shifted one year back when Satish went to Kashmir with his brother and father. In Kashmir, he fall into a river due to which his leg get injured and get hit on head too. He got badly injured after falling into river in Kashmir.

After accident, Satish went through an operation, his legs heals but remain weak. The story now jumps to present, Surender ask Satish, will you come school tomorrow ? Satish shake his head and said no. Surender return from Satish home and Satish is having headache again, he wants to shout loudly but can’t.

Satish is going through such situation because when he had an accident, the medicines he took at that time were not good enough. Since that day, Satish couldn’t go to school on daily basis, so his school teacher permanently suspend him from school. Satish’s father tried to convince Satish to go to new School but he does not go as he was not good in making friends, He also has a fear that if he will go to school, students will make fun of his illness.

After some time, Satish agreed to go in new school. Satish’s father, Avtar Narain faced challenges to find good school for his son because no school was ready to take Satish in their school. They reject Satish’s admission by saying that they take only normal students in their school. Satish’s elder brother, Inder helped him a lot in teaching. Satish’s father brings lots of books for Satish to read as he believe he can learn lots of things by reading books. Satish started reading books and became a keen reader.

Satish read books like “The Life of Garibaldi”, “Works of Munshi Prem chand”, “Sarat Chandra” and many other books. The reading of books make Satish depressed. Reading made a deep impression on Satish’s rational mind. One day, Satish saw a rare bird from his room’s window, he captured it in his mind’s memory and started making painting of it. After making the painting, he keep it in his books. Satish was good at Urdu writing but now he has learned sketching as well.

Satish wants to become an Artist but his father denied it. Satish’s mother ask his father, why are doing this, let my son do what he wants to do. Satish’s father tells his mother that he is worried about his future life and he can’t earn good amount money by becoming an Artist. One day, Satish’s father saw his painting which look good to him, he agreed and let Satish pursue career in painting.

Satish’s father brings him painting brushes, paints and other things which are required for painting. Satish gets very happy and and give a hug to his loving father. Afterwards, Satish become a successful painter with his hard work and dedication for painting. His works are featured in museums like Museum of Modern Art, New York and The Hiroshima Collection. He was also awarded with award like “Padma Vibhushan”

The people who doesn’t succeed in life are the ones who always give excuses and blame others. If you are determined enough, your physical disability or your situations can’t stop you from becoming successful in life.
