Summary of Where There Is A Wheel By P. Sainath
P. Sainath’s “Where There’s a Wheel” tells of a great revolution that took place in a small area of Tamil Nadu called Pudukkottai. This revolution benefited women, especially those with little education. In Pudukkottai, cycling was a great revolution for female empowerment, giving them freedom and autonomy.
The women of Pudukkottai were learning to ride a bicycle and for them it was not just a simple cycling; it was a great opportunity that taught them to live a life of freedom. Cycling gives women a chance to enjoy their lives and they enjoyed their freedom by teaching other women how to ride a bicycle.
The women who were teaching other women to ride a bicycle were called master trainers and they were teaching other women to ride a bicycle by learning from each other. The women who were learning to ride bicycles were sent to join the Cyclist movement and after joining the Cyclist movement, they were included in the New Literature movement, which gave them a sense of confidence and independence.
The revolution was giving freedom to women, especially from the male-dominated society.Learning to ride a bicycle made some tasks easier for women. Cycling was helping women to do many things like they used to make seats for their children in the bicycle so that they could take care of their children while riding the bicycle.
Cycling has freed women from dependence on public transport. Women can go wherever they want with their bicycle without the help of public transport. This also helps them save money.
When the cycling movement for women started in Pudukkottai, it affected the male-dominated society and they started opposing it. They started protesting that they did not like women cycling. The women gave a befitting reply to the men of the village and did not stop cycling. In this revolution, there was a woman named Muthu who supported women in everything and continued the movement.
Muthu was so inspiring and supportive of women that Bhaskaran wrote a national anthem for her. He wrote in the song how women unite and bring a revolution in women’s development. This national anthem became a friend to women and helped them in their struggle.
DC Sheela Rani Chunkath helped poor women by providing them with the loans to buy bicycles. This technological development has helped women in many things. They are becoming independent by taking loans for bicycles and paying it off on their own without any male help.
