Summary of Japan And Brazil Through A Traveler’s Eye By George Mikes
Japan and Brazil is a travel note written by George Mike from the eyes of a traveler who has traveled to Japan and Brazil and experienced its culture and customs closely. So today we are going to discuss about the culture and characteristics of Japan and Brazil. First of all we will start with the culture of Japan and its characteristics.
When the author went to Japan, within minutes he found that the Japanese people are very well behaved people and they respect each others privacy. If you spend even 15 minutes in Japan you will be convinced how well behaved the Japanese people are and how much they respect each other.
Japan is an island country and each of its islands is extremely crowded, yet Japanese people respect each others privacy, they never interfere in each others lives, they have no interest or time to know what is going on in other people’s lives.
On the other hand, we see in India how much people are interested in the lives of others. In India, people are more interested in the lives of others than their own. Japan is different, they respect their own and others’ time. If you go to a subway station in Japan, the railway driver apologizes to people if their train is even 5 seconds late. Now you can imagine how much importance they would give to time.
In Japan, phone booths are open; they put the phone on the wall or on the table, without covering it because they don’t have enough space for it. As the phones are open, you can listen to other people’s conversations, but in Japan it’s different: you can talk openly about personal or business matters and still no one will try to listen to you. Japanese people are very well-mannered. They can easily listen to other people’s conversations if they want to, but they don’t because they are not interested in what other people are doing.
Whenever Japanese people meet someone, they stand facing each other and bow. They bow to show respect to each other. They bow as if they are bowing to a king or queen. In Japan, the wife bows to her husband, children bow to their father and the younger brother bows to the elder brother and the sister bows to each of her brothers. Japanese people respect everyone, regardless of their age. Their seniors respect their juniors and juniors respect their seniors.
In Japan, people make noises while drinking soup. They make scary noises while drinking soup.
Let’s talk about Brazil now : –
Brazilians are calm and easy going, they are never in a hurry and it doesn’t matter to them whether they arrive an hour early or late. Although Brazilians are calm by nature but if you give them a car to drive then no speed is enough for them.
If you give them a car they can go from being a quiet person to a fast person. Automobiles are very expensive in Brazil because they import them from abroad. Cars are so expensive in Brazil that hardly anyone can afford them. Yet the number of automobiles in Brazil is increasing rapidly. The number of automobiles in Brazil is increasing as if they got them for free.
In Brazil, the lives of pedestrians are at risk every day. Pedestrians who accidentally start walking on the highway may be hit by a car. Car drivers care about people walking on the sidewalks, as soon as the driver detects people on the highway roads, he speeds up his car so that they come back to their path which is the sidewalk. So this way we can say that the car drivers are helping pedestrians to get back to footpath.
Avenida Presidente Vargas is the worst place in Brazil because people spend hours on the sidewalk just to cross the street.
