Summary of Africa Poem By David Diop

In poem, writer expresses his love for his birthland, Africa. Our writer, David Diop has spend most of his life in France, but still he has great love for his birthland in his heart.

The story of poem begins with poet who say, Africa my Africa, Africa of proud warriors, Africa of whom my grandmother sings a song on a banks of river. Here poet mean to say, poet was far away from Africa but her grandmother used to tell him great stories about their ancestors from Africa.

The poet never got a chance to know about Africa, but poet’s ancestors were African, therefore, African blood flows in poet’s veins.

The poet’s African ancestors were very hard working and they had a great contribution in developing Africa. When the world was colonized, white American used to torture African and make them their slave.

All the Africans were humiliated and tortured by the white Americans but their backs were unbent and even after facing so much torture, they never surrendered to the Americans. They had a faith and belief in themselves that they will get freedom one day.

White Americans tortured Africans so much that they were forced to work in the hot sun and they used to beat them in their back with hunter. White American used to treat African like animals.

The poet believes that a day will definitely come where there will be no discrimination against Africans, there will be no torture, Africans will live with their heads held high and no one will be able to torture them.
