Summary of Freedom By Rabindranath Tagore

The poem “Freedom” is an patriotic poem which tells us about the life of Pre-Independence India. The story of poem begins with poet who says freedom from fear is the freedom I want for my motherland. I want everyone to live a fearless life in my motherland.

The speaker says to motherland that I want you to be free from the burden of ages you are holding in your back, I want you to be free from the burden which is bending your back and I want you to look into the future with an visionary eye.

As well as I want freedom from the shackles which are making you sleepy and binding you with night’s illness. I want you to be free full from those sleepy eyes which are preventing you to grow.

You are being made to mistrust that star who tells us about the path of truth. Therefore, I want you to be free from those lies which are making you mistrust a star which tells us about the path.

I want you to be free from the anarchy of destiny. The writer is now giving an example by comparing our country, India with a big ship. He says the sails of our ship are completely dependent on uncertain winds.

We shouldn’t trust blindly uncertain winds for the direction of our ship. These uncertain winds are those lies which are given to us by Britishers for the direction of our country. Therefore, I want freedom from all those lies which are given to us by Britisher.

The author says our ship’s helm is handed to those hands which are rigid and cold as death. Then how can these hands take us forward to the better future. So we must free ourselves from those shackles hands which are preventing our country from going forward.

As well as I want freedom to live in world where we can’t be treated like a puppet. We were slaves to Britishers, so that’s is why author is asking to be free from puppet’s world. I want freedom for my country from puppet’s world.

I want freedom from those brainless wires which are taking my country backward. I want from freedom from those mindless habits which are draining my country. We don’t have freedom on our country, we have no freedom to do anything in our own country because we are ruled by Britishers.

This is not a real life as its an mimicry life. In real life, there is no rules to live by, everyone has freedom to live and speak. I want freedom for my country from Britishers.
