Summary of The Village Song By Sarojini Naidu

The poet says there are many parts of India where there is no water services in people’s home. The women of the house have to go very far to fetch water from river for home. The story of poem begins with village woman who is out to fetch drinking water from river but she is very late and its very dark now.

The woman’s pitchers are full of water and she have to carry it to far. Her path is very long and lone through which she has to go back to home. The village woman is asking herself that why she stopped at boatman’s song. Why she does not returns to home. The dark night is increasing very fast and its getting dark.

The village woman is saying that the sound she is hearing, is it white crane voice ? Or is it wild owl cry sound ? There is no moon light to show her way to the home. If in this dark any snake bite her or any evil soul smite her. Ram re Ram, she will die immediately and no one will learn about her as she is completely alone.

She is requesting god to protect her from any animal or evil spirit as she is in very danger. The woman is missing her family, she is thinking if she does not reach home then what her family will think or do.

The village woman says her brother must be thinking why his sister has not reached home yet. Her mother will wait for her and cry. She will pray to god to return her daughter back to home safely. The village woman’s mother may think whether her daughter is drowned in Yamuna’s water because it is very deep and flows so quickly. The shadows of evening is coming so fast like a black birds coming in the sky.

The woman is thinking if any thunderstorm comes, who will save her from it. As well as if lightning comes, where she will hide in such a quiet place. She is saying if god will not help her, then Ram re Ram she may die.

The woman is afraid though but she believe in god and know that he will protect her from any kind of danger. She has a hope that god will help her and no danger can come near to her.
