In the Bazaars of Hyderabad is a poem written by famous Indian political activist and poet, Sarojini Naidu. The poem was originally published on 1912. This is a 30 lines poem and divided into five sestets.

Summary of In the Bazaars of Hyderabad By Sarojini Naidu

In the first stanza of poem poet is asking merchant “what are they selling in the Bazaar of Hyderabad ?”. The merchant replies that we are selling a turbans of crimson and silver color, Tunics of purple brocade, we sells mirrors whose border is made up of Amber. We are selling daggers whose handle is made up of Jade.

The poet goes to second merchant and asks “What do you merchant weigh ?”. The merchant replies that we weigh Saffron, Lentil and rice. The poet asks “What do you maidens grind ?”. The maidens replies that we mostly grind, Sandalwood, spice and henna. The poet now asks pedlar “What do you pedlar call ?”. The pedlar replies that we sell chessmen and ivory dice.

In this poem poet is trying to tell us that how big is the Bazaar of Hyderabad and how many varieties are available here. The poet goes to Goldsmith and asks “What do you make ?”. The goldsmith replies that we make anklet, wrist let and ring. We do make bells for the feet of blue pigeons. We goldsmith do make girdles of gold for the dancers. Apart from this we also make Gold Scabbards for the king.

The poet now goes at new shop and asks “What do you fruit men shout”. The fruit men replies, Citron, Pomegranate and plum. The Bazaar is big and there are musicians as well in market.

The poet goes to musician and asks ” What do you musicians play ?”. The musician replies that we play Cithar, sarangi and drum. Afterwards, poet asks magician “What do you magician chant ?”. The magician replies that we spells for the aeon to come.

The poet asks flower girls “What do you weave with the tassels of azure and red”. The flower girls replies that we make Sehra for bridegroom. Apart from this we make chaplets to garland his groom bed. We also make a white bed-sheet of flowers to perform the sleep of dead.

About Author : Sarojini Naidu was a famous former governor of Uttar Pradesh. She was a Nightingale of India. She was born in 13 February in 1879 and died in 2 March 1949.Sarojini was a part of Indian National Movement in 1905 and she was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi.
