Summary of The Midnight Visitor By Robert Arthur

Introduction to the story

“The Midnight Visitor” is an interesting detective story, which is a unique blend of mystery, adventure, cleverness and humor. This story teaches us that confidence and understanding are more important than appearance.

The main characters of the story are

Ausable: A spy who is completely different from traditional spies – he neither looks smart nor is he fit, but his mind is very sharp.

Fowler: A writer who wants to understand the truth of the life of a spy.

Max: An enemy agent, who tries to steal secrets at gunpoint.

Beginning of the story

The story begins in the evening at a hotel. The writer Fowler has come to meet a spy for the first time. He thinks he’ll have an exciting experience like the ones in the movies — dangerous missions, high-speed car chases, guns and explosions. But when he meets Ausible, he’s in for a surprise.

Ausible is neither tall nor handsome. He’s fat, with blue eyes, and his way of talking is slow and quiet. He seems like a normal person — not at all like a spy. Fowler’s hopes seem to be dashed.

But this is when the story takes a turn.

A Surprise Visitor

When Fowler and Ausible go to the hotel room and close the door, they both notice that someone is already in the room — Max, an enemy spy, with a gun pointed at him.

Max asks Ausible for a very important confidential report — supposedly due the next day. He threatens that if Ausible doesn’t give him the report, bad things will happen to him.

Ausible’s cleverness

Now the most important thing of the story comes out from here – Ausible does not panic. Rather, he remains very calm and immediately makes up a story. He knows that Max is standing in front of him with a gun, so he does not fight, but acts wisely.

Ausible does not show any fear on his face. He says:

“Max, this is not the first time someone has come to my room. That is why I complained to the hotel management. And today I have called the police. They will knock on the door in a short while.”

After saying this, he adds another lie:

“You can escape from the balcony, which is outside this room. I often go out from there.”

In fact, there is no balcony there. This was a completely imaginary story, which Ausible made up at that very moment.

Bell sound and Max running away

Just then there is a knock on the door – it is actually the waiter Ausible had ordered drinks for. But Max, who thinks the police have arrived, panics and takes the gun and jumps from the imaginary balcony.

Max does not know that he has committed suicide, because there is no balcony there. He just becomes a victim of Ausible’s imagination.

Fowler’s reaction

Fowler’s eyes widen after seeing all this. He now understands what it means to be a real spy. This work is not done by brandishing guns or fighting, but by using the mind and confidence.

The Midnight Visitor Themes

1. Intelligence vs. Power:

The main message of this story is that there is no greater power than cunning and calmness. Ausible was neither powerful, nor armed, but he defeated an armed enemy with his mind and words.

2. Don’t go by appearances:

Ausibel looked like a normal person, but his mind was exceptionally sharp. This teaches us to never judge someone by their appearance.

3. Confidence is the biggest weapon:

Ausibel’s biggest strength was his courage and confidence. Without fear, without panicking, he turns the situation in his favor.

4. Difference in thinking:

Max tried to win by force and weapons, but Ausibel defeated him by the tricks of the mind. This also teaches us that every battle is won not only by strength, but also by wisdom.

Emotional side of the story

There is a very emotional message hidden behind the story – every person has strength inside him, one just needs to know how to understand and use it.

Ausibel’s calmness teaches us that even in the most difficult situations, a solution can be found with patience and understanding.

Through Fowler’s eyes, we readers also learn that the thrill in life that we look for in films or books is actually hidden in the mind game and maturity of personality.

Conclusion

“The Midnight Visitor” is a very interesting and inspiring story, which proves that a real spy is not the one who shoots, but the one who wins the game with his mind.

Each character of this story teaches us something:

Ausible: A symbol of calmness, confidence and intelligence

Max: A mixed picture of arrogance and fear

Fowler: A curious person who seeks thrill from the eyes of a common man

This story is not just a detective incident, but a life lesson – that every crisis can be solved not by violence, but by calm intelligence.
