Summary of The Spectator Club By Richard Steele

The story of essay revolve around a life of Six members of Spectator Club. These six members of Spectator club are Sir Roger De Coverley, A nameless lawyer, Sir Andrew Freeport, Captain Sentry, Will Honeycomb and A Nameless clergyman. Sir Roger De Coverly is most important person of Spectator club. He is an eccentric person but does not interfere in other people’s life.

Sir Roger was rejected by a widow due to which he never marry. He became a serious and better person after widow’s rejection, he treat people kindly and respect everyone. Sir Roger changed himself but never his dressing sense as he lost interest in fashion since rejection.

The second member of club is Unknown lawyer who is not given any name by Richard Steele. He is characterized as bachelor man who is studying law. He chooses law profession by his father’s choice. He is the most educated man in entire state. He have read everything about Aristotle and Greet literature and loves reading about it.

He doesn’t have much interest in law and spend most of time in reading literature books. He have chosen law field for his father happiness. When his father asks him questions about speech and law, he take help from his lawyer partner and answer his father’s question. Except his friend no one think of him idiot. He has great knowledge about literature.

The third character is Sir Andrew Freeport who is a third member of club. He is a hardworking person and successful businessman of London. He is very sharp in making money. All the people of his town respect him because of his wealth.

Sir Andrew has great knowledge about his business and knows that business only grows when you work hard. He believes you should be a friend of successful businessman instead of educated person as you can learn more from businessman as compare to educated person. Sir Andrew has made every single penny of his wealth by himself. He keep giving advice to England to be rich. He has share in every ship of England.

The fourth character of club is Captain Sentry. He is courageous, passionate and well matured person. But unfortunately, Captain Sentry is a that type of person who doesn’t know how to use his talent. Captain Sentry worked as a Ship Captain but still he is not clever enough to represent himself. He is capable person but doesn’t get the suitable position which he deserve. Captain Sentry is in such situation of life where people complain and blame their life but he is a great person who has no regrets and complain with his life. He never blame his luck or world no matter how hard life gets for him.

The fifth character of club is Will Honeycomb. He is such person who is growing old but evolving according to his personality. Will Honeycomb got quite a lot in life very easily. Even though he is growing old but still he looks good and has good height. Will Honeycomb was always interested in impressing women. He wears such type of dresses which matches his style. He is great seducer and knows the history of every type of fashion. His whole life is filled with female interest.

The last character of club is a nameless Clergyman. We doesn’t get to meet him much but whenever he meet, it makes the day. He is clergyman who always talks about philosophy. Everything is good in him but his body is very weak as he is physically weak. He work as a advisor among lawyers. He is great followers because of his mind strength.

The writer say, we can expect from him that whenever he comes between among us, he would talk about religious subject, he speaks on religious subject in such a way like he has no interest in other things of the world. These are the six members of Spectator club. You should remember their names, about their nature and what they do. Keep in mind that two members of Spectator Club are nameless.
