Summary of The Looking Glass By Kamala Das

In poem, Kamala Das has given advice to women and also shared her personal experiences. The poet has shown a true image of lustful relationship between man and woman.

The story of poem begins with poet who say, getting a man to love you is very easy, you just have to be honest with them about your wants as woman. Stand nude before the glass in front of him so that he can see himself as stronger and believe it and see you as softer, younger and lovelier.

Here poet is not telling the qualities of women, she mean to say, because of women soft and lovelier body, men consider themselves strong. When your man praise you, accept his admiration. Notice the perfection of his limbs, notice his red eyes when he take shower, notice his shy walk by bathroom floor, and the jerky way of he urinates. Notice all the fond details of him which make him male.

The poet say, women should gift everything of hers to man, gift him what makes you woman, the scent of your long hair, the musk of sweat between the breasts. Gift him the warm shock of your menstrual blood, and all your sexual desires.

Getting a man to love you is easy but love is not everlasting, you may have to live without it. Here poet mean to say, dependency of woman on man can sometimes brings misery to her. When man separate from woman, she become a living dead body, her eyes looks for man, she meets strangers, and her ears yearn to hear the voice that used to call her name. Her woman’s body that used to take pleasure with him, will now have to live without him.
