Summary of The Palanquin Bearers By Sarojini Naidu

The Palanquin bearers means those people who carry a palanquin of bride and carry it to its in laws house. The poem is from palanquin bearer’s point of view who carry bride palanquin effortlessly and tells us about bride’s feeling.

The story begins with palanquin bearers who says we carry lightly – lightly the palanquin of bride along with us. We carry bride palanquin lightly because we don’t want bride to face any kind of problem while travelling.

She sways in our song like a flower in wind, she is enjoying our song. She is like that ocean bird who fly touching foam of an ocean. According to poet, the bride is light like that ocean bird who fly  above ocean.

She floats like a beautiful dreams which comes from lips. We are very happy and moving forward while singing songs. We are carrying palanquin bride like a pearl on a string. We aren’t feeling any weight of her or her palanquin.

We are carrying her along with us very softly and softly as she is very precious like a pearl. She shines in our song like star in sky. She is shining in our song like a sky and making it more beautiful to hear as our song is about her only.

She shines like a morning sunlight on a beam of a tide. She falls like a tears which comes from the eyes of bride.

Here bride has two thoughts, first, she is going away from her family due to which she is sad, and second, she is going at her husband’s home now because of which she is happy and smiling. We are moving forward slowly and slowly and singing a song.

We are carrying along with us like a pearl on string. The poem talks about a Indian culture and tells us about a role of palanquin bearers. How they play a important roles in any marriage. How they used to take bride to its in-laws house and how happy it makes them.
