Summary of Batter My Heart By John Donne
The story of poem begins with poet as requesting god to make his heart better by hitting hard on it, though you use easy way to make people better, you make people shine, better and you also wants to use these way on me.
So that I rise and stand, you should overthrow me, break me with all your force and burn me and make me a new person. Don’t try to fix me but change me and make me new person.
I’m like that city who is controlled somebody else, and I’m doing my best to make you my owner but I’m not able to successfully do it. I’m occupied by somebody else, maybe it’s devil who is controlling me. My mind is viceroy and helper of God so I should keep it away from negative thoughts. But my mind has been occupied by negative thoughts and now it is weak and untrue.
Yet I love you with all my heart my, God, and I would be happy if I receive your love but I’m occupied and controlled by your enemy. And that enemy is none other than Devil.
The poet request God to divorce him from Devil and break that knot which is connecting him with Devil. Do anything and untie me from Devil.
Bring me to your shelter and imprison me so that I can’t leave you. Because then I will never be free from your bondage. I will be with you forever until you ask to me go. I can’t be pure until you accept me. The poet is saying all these words to his God.
